In nature, ozone is produced by the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (a photochemical reaction) and by electrical discharges—such as lightning strikes (a bioelectrical reaction). It is artificially produced using ultraviolet rays and corona discharges. Corona discharges occurring between electrodes produce ozone from the oxygen present in the surrounding environment. To describe this phenomenon briefly, the energy of the discharges splits oxygen molecules into individual atoms, which then combine with other oxygen molecules (O₂) to form ozone (O₃).
About 90% of ozone is found in the upper atmosphere in the form of the “ozone layer.” In the lower atmosphere, it is formed during natural electrical discharges. That is why, after a thunderstorm, the air smells of ozone, which is produced by the heat of the electric arc when lightning strikes.
Ozone is thermally unstable and gradually breaks down into diatomic oxygen (O₂) even at room temperature. Although ozone has very strong bactericidal properties, it has a very short lifespan. When ozone comes into contact with bacteria, viruses, or odors, the extra oxygen atom completely destroys them through oxidation.
Ozonation is safe. An ozone generator converts oxygen from the air into triatomic ozone. When ozone comes into contact with microorganisms, it reverts to normal, diatomic oxygen, and the microorganisms are neutralized through oxidation.
